Cards Win Seventh-Straight Landmark Title, Monaghan MVP

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's lacrosse team won their 12th Landmark Conference championship and seventh-straight with a 13-9 victory over Scranton Saturday at Carlini Field.

As a result, the sixth-ranked Cardinals (9-0) will also make their 12th appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship and seventh consecutive.

Junior Molly Monaghan was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after totaling four goals, one assist, eight draw controls and two caused turnovers in wins over Susquehanna and Scranton.

With the game tied at 5-5 at halftime, senior Holly Regan scored just 27 seconds into the start of the second half before the Royals (9-2) tied the game for the fourth time on Erin Reich's team-leading 29th goal of the season with 26:14 remaining.

Catholic would score the next three-straight goals to take its largest lead of the game, 9-6, wth 21:10 to play. Regan had a hand in all three goals, scoring one and assisting on the other two.

Regan assisted sophomore Kate Olsen on her team-high 28th goal of the year to start the streak at 23:11 before netting her second of the game off an assist from Monaghan at 22:59. Regan then returned the favor on Monaghan's second at 21:10.

Trailing 9-6, Scranton answered with three of the game's next four goals to pull within one, 10-9, with 7:04 left. Two of the goals came on free-position shots where the Royals were 3-for-5 on the day.

However, led by back-to-back goals from Regan and a goal and an assist from Olsen, the Cardinals would improve their record to 13-0 at Carlini Field, including 4-0 in conference tournament contests with championships in 2019 and 2021.

Regan finished with six points on four goals and two assists and now has 193 for her career as she looks to become just the seventh player in team history to reach 200. With six points, she moved past Michelle Matulac (1998-00) into seventh place on the team's career points list.

Meanwhile, Olsen totaled two goals and three points and leads the team with 29 goals and 37 points this season.

Junior Clare Richards had one goal, one assist, two ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers while freshman Anna Corona had one goal, three draw controls and one caused turnover.

Defensive, senior Nanci Hernandez made nine saves, including five in the second half to improve to 7-0 this season and 48-14 in 65 career starts. She now has 505 career saves becoming just the second player in team history to surpass 500, joining  Melissa Brashear (2007-10) who holds the record with 582.

The selection show for the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship will be broadcast live on NCAA.com on Monday, May 3 at 10:30 a.m.
