Cardinals Swept by Blue Jays on Day Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University baseball team fell victim to timely hitting as Elizabethtown swept a doubleheader 7-6 and 2-1 on Sunday at Talbot Field.

Catholic (8-6, 8-6 LC) allowed nine runs on 13 hits as the Blue Jays (9-7, 9-7 LC) pulled ahead in the top of the final innings for a one-run victory in both games.

Elizabethtown 7, Catholic 6:

Reminiscent of yesterday's matchup, the Cardinals and Blue Jays took turns taking the lead from each other in game one. After three scoreless innings, Elizabethtown was the first on the board with a solo home run in the top of the fourth. Catholic responded in similar fashion with their own one-run home run off junior designated hitter Peter Giombetti's bat to tie 1-1 heading into the fifth.

The Blue Jays pulled ahead with an RBI-double to left center to score the leading 2-1 run. Senior Keith Campbell's single put him on the basepaths for the Cardinals where he was driven across the plate by sophomore Ben Nardi's double to right center for another tied score. Nardi was sent home for Catholic's third run when senior Nolan Lundholm singled up the middle for the 3-2 lead.

The sixth inning proved hitless for both sides until the Blue Jays' bats came alive in the seventh. Elizabethtown started a rally with four hits to score three runs, followed by another run in the eighth for a comfortable 3-run lead over the Cardinals going into the bottom of the eighth.

Lundholm led off the at-bat with his second double of the day and advanced to third on a Giombetti single. Senior Michael Doody's ground-out to the pitcher allowed for Giombetti to advance to second, leaving two Cardinals in scoring position. A wild pitch and an RBI from classmate Billy Duke brought in Lundholm and Giombetti to cut the deficit to just one run. As a result of an RBI-double from sophomore Derek Zelesnick, the Cardinals were tied up with the Blue Jays heading into the ninth inning.

Despite the rally, Elizabethtown took a one-run lead once more off a single hit for a final 7-6 score.

Jack Zaffiro started on the mound with two runs scored on three hits including three walks and five strikeouts in five innings pitched. Jesse Lacefield took the loss in 0.1 innings pitched falling to 0-1.

Elizabethtown 2, Catholic 1:

A sacrifice fly RBI from Zelesnick would allow for Catholic to claim an early lead in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Tommy Antonucci drew a walk followed by senior Kendric Musser who reached first on a Elizabethtown fielding error. Sophomore Zach Burton's single loaded the bases as Zelesnick approached the plate to fly out to left field and score Antonucci for the Cardinals' one and only run.

The next four innings remained scoreless until the top of the sixth. Junior Nick Marini walked the Blue Jays' first hitter of the inning who later advanced to third on a throwing error. A groundout to second base allowed for the runner on third to cross the plate, tying the Cardinals 1-1.

A triple from Elizabethtown kicked off the top of the seventh who was later brought in for the winning run off a sacrifice fly. Catholic once again could not get back in front, completing the Blue Jays' sweep.

Marini went the distance on the mound for the Cardinals with five strikeouts and four walks. He took his first loss falling to 2-1.

Catholic returns to action on Saturday, April 24 when they host Scranton for another Landmark Conference double header. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
