Seniors Highlight 35-14 Victory Over Norwich on Senior Day

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University football seniors Mark Cheffers and Preston Jeffrey each had 100 yards receiving to lead the Cardinals to a 35-14 victory over Norwich on Senior Day Saturday at Cardinal Stadium.

Catholic (6-3, 4-1 NEWMAC) posted its fifth win in six home games this season, but more importantly, set up a showdown with Springfield next week as the team looks for its first NEWMAC championship since joining the league in 2017.

Cheffers had four catches for a career-high 116 yards while Jeffrey had four catches for a career-high 103 yards and two touchdowns. For Jeffrey, it was the second multi-score game of his career after he had nine catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-7 win over WPI on Oct. 9.

Jeffrey has had at least one touchdown reception in six of the team's nine games this year and ranks second in the NEWMAC with eight receiving touchdowns and fifth in scoring with 48 points. He is the first Cardinal since Lucas Morley in 2016 to have at least eight receiving touchdowns in a season.

Playing in what could be the final home game of their careers, Cheffers and Jeffrey combined for 219 yards as sophomore Madden Lowe completed 17-of-27 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns.

Lowe has now thrown 26 touchdowns passes this season, the most by a Cardinal since Keith Ricca threw 33 in 2008.

After an interception and a punt on its first two possessions, Catholic scored on four of its next five to take a commanding 28-0 lead with six seconds remaining in the third. The Cardinals scored 21 third-quarter points, finding the end zone for the third time on a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Devin Miles.

It was the first career touchdown for Miles who has appeared in 15 games, including all nine this season.

The Cadets (2-8, 1-5 NEWMAC) finally got on the board with 10:53 to play in the fourth as Owen Trudeau found Trevor Chase from 28 yards out to cap a three-play, 49-yard drive.

Lowe and Jeffrey would connect for the second time on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 7:19 left in the fourth before Norwich scored for the second time, taking advantage of two personal foul penalties, one pass interference and a 4th-and-8 conversion to provide the final margin.

The Catholic defense has allowed just two touchdowns or less in three of its last four games for a total of 28 points.

On Saturday, the Cardinals totaled 11.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions while holding the Cadets to just 2-of-12 on third-down conversions. Senior Gabe Aparicio led the way with eight tackles, including 2.0 for loss, and one interception. Senior Liam Dearing added seven tackles, one sack and 3.5 tackles for loss.

Catholic heads to Massachussetts next Saturday, Nov. 13 to take on Springfield. Kickoff from Steinbrenner Stadium is at noon. The Cardinals are looking for their first win in four meetings against the Pride and a share of the NEWMAC regular-season title.
