McCarter Leads Cards Past Seahawks in Jamie Roberts Game

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On a night when the team honored Jamie L. Roberts, Catholic University women's basketball junior Sammie McCarter scored 19 points in a 73-48 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) Tuesday.

Catholic (6-0) posted its second win against the Seahawks this season and has now won 12-straight in the series, including 11 in-a-row at home. The Cardinals also improved to 9-5 in home openers under head coach Matt Donohue.

McCarter finished one point shy of her career high set in a 92-68 victory over Anna Maria in her first collegiate game on Nov. 10, 2019. She also had eight rebounds and four steals, both career highs.

Led by six points from senior Amanda Johnson, Catholic led 21-9 after the first quarter, scoring 11 points off 10 St. Mary's turnovers.

The Seahawks (1-4) cut their deficit to 10 midway through the second, but the Cardinals closed the half on a 12-4 run to take their largest lead, 37-19 at halftime.

Johnson led nine different scorers in the first half with nine points. Junior Erin Doherty added six points and four rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

McCarter scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the second half as Catholic led by as many as 29 points. She was 6-of-9 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from three-point range while adding six rebounds.

Johnson finished with 11 points, totaling six from the free throw line where she was 6-for-6.

The Cardinals outrebounded St. Mary's, 59-32, which led to 28 second-chance points. They also scored 29 points off 29 Seahawk turnovers.

In the first meeting between the two teams this season, Catholic totaled a season-high 61 rebounds as it outrebounded St. Mary's, 61-30.

Doherty ended with seven points and seven rebounds while senior Luca Mamula had seven points and eight rebounds. Reigning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, junior Rachel Bussanich, had six points and seven rebounds.

The Cardinals look to extend their win streak to seven next Tuesday, Nov. 30 when they welcome local rival Gallaudet to Franny Murray Court. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

NOTE: Whenever the women's basketball teams from St. Mary's and Catholic meet, they celebrate the memory of Jamie L. Roberts who had a lasting impact on the athletic departments of both schools. A 2011 graduate of St. Mary's, she was a three-sport standout in soccer, basketball and lacrosse for the Seahawks who later became an assistant women's basketball coach at Catholic prior to the 2011-12 season.

Tragically, Jamie passed away on June 13, 2014 while participating in the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults' 4K for Cancer bike ride across America. In honor of Jamie's favorite color, members of both teams wear orange.

To further Jamie's legacy at Catholic University, her family established a women's basketball assistant coaching position in her honor, the first of its kind at Catholic University. In a ceremony earlier today, Bridget Power was officially installed as the first Jamie L. Roberts Assistant Women's Basketball Coach. A 2017 graduate of Catholic, Power played four seasons for the Cardinals from 2013-17 after Roberts recruited her and then coached her as a freshman.
