First Half Leads Springfield to 28-14 Win Over Football

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Catholic University football senior Preston Jeffrey posted his second-straight 100-yard receiving game, but the Cardinals fell to Springfield Saturday at Stagg Field, 28-14.

The Cardinals (6-4, 4-2 NEWMAC) ended the season with four conference victories for the first time in four seasons since joining the NEWMAC in 2017. With Merchant Marine's 49-14 win over Coast Guard in the Secretaries' Cup, Catholic finished third in the NEWMAC standings.

Jeffrey totaled his third 100-yard receiving performance of the season with five catches for 103 yards. Sophomore Madden Lowe had 291 yards on 25-of-47 passing, but was limited by three interceptions.

Catholic had seven of its 11 drives result in missed opportunities as it had three interceptions, two turnovers on downs, one fumble and a missed field goal. The Cardinals also had an eighth drive that resulted in two kneel downs to end the first half.

Meanwhile, Springfield (7-3, 6-0 NEWMAC) did the majority of its damage in the first half where it totaled all 28 points, 21 first downs and 275 of the team's 353 yards of total offense. The Pride scored touchdowns on their first four drives while missing on a 39-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter.

The Catholic defense limited Springfield to just 78 yards in the second half while forcing three punts, an interception and turnover on downs, but the offense committed three turnovers and had a third potential touchdown nullified by penalties on back-to-back plays early in the fourth quarter.

Junior Noah Miller had a career-high 12 tackles while senior Matthew DiSanto added a career-high 11, including 1.5 for loss.

With six wins, the Cardinals finished with their most wins since 2013 when they also went 6-4. That year, the team also went 3-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).

Individually, Lowe finished the season with 2,928 yards passing, just 72 yards shy of becoming the first Cardinal to throw for 3,000 yards in a season since Greg Cordivari threw for 3,282 yards in 2011. With 27 touchdowns, he was just three short of being the first with 30 touchdown passes in a season since Keith Ricca had 33 in 2008.
