Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Catholic University women's basketball team opened the season with a 64-30 win over St. Mary's (Md.) Friday in the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament at McDaniel.
The Cardinals (1-0) improved their record to 8-6 in season openers under head coach Matt Donohue, including 3-0 against the Seahawks after wins in 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2021-22.
Catholic is 11-0 against St. Mary's since Donohue's first season in 2008-09.
Sophomore Molly Aromando led the Cardinals with 12 points in her first career game with the Cardinals since transferring from Division II College of Saint Rose. She was 4-of-7 from three-point range and added seven rebounds.
In her first collegiate game, freshman Carly Mulvaney totaled 10 points and seven rebounds while senior Amanda Johnson also flirted with a double double, finishing with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds. The 2021 Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Year also added three steals.
A total of 12 players scored at least one point for Catholic while 15 had at least one rebound and 11 had at least one assist.
The Cardinals got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first 10 points and taking a 34-10 lead at halftime after holding the Seahawks to just 5-of-25 shooting from the floor and scoring 15 points off of 15 turnovers. They also held a 33-14 edge in rebounds.
Catholic led by as many as 36 points midway through the fourth quarter while scoring 29 points off the bench.
Junior Erin Doherty finished with six points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. In her first game since Dec. 14, 2019, senior Luca Mamula had four points and five rebounds. The 2019 All-Landmark Conference Second Team selection logged a team-high 18 minutes.
The Cardinals look to capture their third title in the last four regular season tournaments on Saturday as they take on host McDaniel in the championship game of the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament at 6 p.m. The Green Terror beat Methodist in Friday's second game, 53-39.
