Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Catholic University football sophomore Madden Lowe threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns as the Cardinals posted a 30-7 victory over WPI Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
Catholic (4-2, 2-0 NEWMAC) has now won six of their last nine overall and three-straight in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) dating back to 2019.
The Cardinals also picked up its first win in four meetings against WPI and start NEWMAC play with back-to-back wins for the first time.
Lowe completed 37-of-48 passes for a career-best 77.1 percent and and 315 yards, eclipsing the 300-yard mark for the third time this season.
Lowe completed a pass to 11 different receivers with his favorite target being senior Preston Jeffrey who had a career-best nine catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns. He just missed his second career 100-yard receiving game after he had six catches for 100 yards in a 32-29 victory over Endicott on Sept. 18.
Catholic scored on three of its first four drives as they jumped out to a 17-0 lead with 12:42 remaining in the second quarter. After a 28-yard field goal by senior Fabrizio Reilly got Catholic on the board, Lowe connected with Jeffrey for a 54-yard touchdown and 17-yard score on back-to-back drives to start the second quarter.
The Cardinals took their 17-point margin into halftime before extending it to 23 following an 18-yard touchdown pass from Lowe to freshman Sam Cornacchione with 1:33 left in the third quarter. It was the first career touchdown reception for Cornacchione.
The Engineers (1-5, 0-2 NEWMAC) avoided the shutout with 13:18 to play in the fourth when Zachary Levy scored on a 5-yard run.
Catholic capped the scoring with 5:17 remaining when Lowe found junior defensive end Huey Bodger on third-and-five from the WPI 6-yard line for Bodger's first career score.
The Cardinals converted 9-of-16 third down opportunities and 2-of-3 fourth down chances en route to 25 first downs.
Defensively, Catholic held WPI to 206 yards of total offense while totaling three interceptions and two sacks. Senior Gabe Aparicio had six tackles, three passes defended and one interception. Freshman Mason Stillwell and junior Kyle Egan also had an interception with Stillwell picking off his team-leading third pass of the season.
Senior Dieter Kerat and freshman Carson Henry each had one sack for the Cardinals.
Catholic looks to continue its winning ways next Saturday when it hosts Coast Guard on Cardinal Weekend. The Cardinals are 3-1 at home this season and have won four of their last five at Cardinal Stadium. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
