CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Competing in its first-ever Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday, the Catholic University men's rowing team placed 33rd in the Men's Championship Eights.
One of the premier Regattas in the world, the 56th Head Of The Charles was held this weekend for the first time in two years after the race was canceled last year due to COVID.
Sunday's racing on the Charles River took place under sunny skies and a light headwind with temperatures in the upper 50s.
Catholic completed the three-mile course in 16:37.731 to place 33rd out of the 39 crews that finished. Rowing for the Cardinals was stroke Mike Phillips, 7 Jack Shields, 6 David Fritz, 5 Mark Madaras, 4 Alec Bonjolo, 3 Nathan Lovell, 2 Ryan McGann and bow Declan Waters with coxswain Clare Delmore.
MIT won the event with a time of 14:54.924 while Drexel was second at 14:57.553 and Marist rounded out the podium in a time of 14:58.039.
Catholic finished 0.136 seconds ahead of Ohio State while also finishing ahead of RIT, Colby College, UMass, Illinois and SUNY Maritime. The teams from Ithaca and Colgate did not finish the race.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia, Pa.
