Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University baseball team came back from an early four-run deficit and another two-run disadvantage in the eighth inning but could not complete the comeback Thursday afternoon in a 10-7 loss to Hood at Robert J. Talbot Field.
Seniors Nolan Lundholm and Connor Cozad led the Cardinals (2-3) with four hits each as the team picked up 18 base knocks on a chilly and windy day, but left 11 runners on base.
The Blazers (2-2) jumped out to an early lead with four runs on six hits in the first two innings of the ballgame. Sophomore left-hander Colin Kehoe settled things down with three innings of relief, giving up one and striking out three.
Catholic got back into the game with a three-run fourth inning sparked by Lundholm and Cozad. Lundholm led off with a laser single to right field and Cozad bomed a double over the center fielder's head to put runners on second and third. An RBI sacrifice fly from Billy Duke and RBI singles from Cole Campbell and Tighe Watson gave the Cardinals three runs on five hits in the frame.
After Hood added a fifth run the next half inning, Catholic's familiar faces added a couple more runs to tie the contest at 5-5. Three consecutive singles to center field by Lundhold, Cozad, and Duke brought in two runs to equalize.
The Cardinals rallied once again to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth after Hood regained the lead at 7-5. Singles from Michael Doody and Connor Sullivan got the inning going, then Lundholm and Cozad delivered once again with RBI singles to make the game 7-7.
The Blazers responded with a three-run inning of their own in the top of the ninth as daylight waned at Talbot Field. The visitors held on 10-7 for their second straight win over Catholic in as many years.
The Cardinals stay at home for a weekend series against Skidmore starting this Saturday, February 29 at 11:30am. Catholic hosts Skidmore for a doubleheader on Saturday and a third contest Sunday afternoon.
