Second Half Carries Hampden-Sydney Past Cardinals, 11-9

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Catholic University men's lacrosse sophomore Joey Rockovich totaled four points, but Hampden-Sydney outscored the Cardinals by five in the second half as the Tigers overcame a three-goal deficit en route to an 11-9 victory Wednesday at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

Catholic (0-3) outshot the Tigers 48-37 and scored on 3-of-5 extra-man opportunities, but were outscored in the second half, 7-2.

Hampden-Sydney (3-0) won 17-of-23 faceoffs and held a 34-26 advantage in ground balls.

Rockovich had two goals and an assist in the first quarter as the teams were tied at 3-3. However, Catholic scored the first three goals of the second, including two with the extra-man to take a 6-3 lead with 10:11 remaining.

Each team would add a goal in the final six minutes, with sophomore Nick Fanelli adding his first of the season with 5:21 left, as the Cardinals took a 7-4 into halftime.

Sophomore Sean Baudo gave Catholic its third man-up goal with 7:52 left in the third quarter to maintain its three-goal lead at 8-5, but the Tigers responded with the next five to take a 10-8 advantage with 11:07 to play in the fourth.

Sophomore Cameron Dunn stopped the Tiger run with his first goal of the season to pull the Cards within one with 7:14 remaining, but that would be as close as they would get despite outshooting the Tigers 5-1 over the next five minutes.

Hampden-Sydney's Nick Arcuri totaled five of his 16 saves in the fourth quarter, including three of Catholic's five shots during that five-minute span, before the Tigers converted a turnover into their 11th goal of the game with 1:07 left to improve their record to 6-0 at home against the Cardinals.

Freshman Jackson Powers netted his first career goal to start the Cards' three-goal run to begin the second quarter while freshman Nic Pezone finished with 13 saves, one shy of his career high set at Southern Virginia. He totaled eight of his saves in the second half, including five in the fourth quarter.

Catholic travels to Arcadia on Saturday. Faceoff from Jean Lenox West Field is at 1 p.m. The Cardinals have won three of the last four meetings against the Knights since 2016, including a 9-8 road win on Feb. 25, 2017.
