YORK, Pa. - The Catholic University women's soccer team came out on top in its season opener Friday night in a seven-goal match to defeat York 4-3 on the road. 

The Cardinals won their first match of the season for the seventh straight year with a four-goal effort after jumping out to an early lead. The visitors scored twice in just over a two-minute span to take a first half advantage. 

Junior Krista Boretti scored the team's first goal of the year on an unassisted effort in the 15th minute, and then senior forward Grace Boras collected a pass from fellow senior attacker Elizabeth Johnson in the 17th minute and finished across the box to put the Cards up 2-0 early on. 

Catholic added to its 2-0 halftime lead in the 54th minute when Johnson got involved again to score her first goal of the season. Freshman Alexa Adelmann delivered a long pass from midfield, and Johnson tucked the goal inside the left post to put Catholic up 3-0. 

Junior Maggie Moorcones stepped up to the penalty spot in the 64th minute and converted a PK to add a goal. The hefty lead proved crucial as York responded with three goals in less than ten minutes to make the game 4-3 in the 82nd minute. 

Junior goalkeeper Nina Fernandez made four saves in a busy second half to preserve the lead and victory for the visiting Cardinals. 

Catholic will play its first varsity contest at Carlini Field in a home match on Sunday, September 1 against DeSales. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
