Cardinals' Win Streak Ends in Loss to Stevenson

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The win streak for the Catholic University baseball team ended at 12 games Monday afternoon in an 8-1 loss on the road to Stevenson.

The Cardinals (23-11) scored the first run of the game, but just six hits and five defensive errors allowed the Mustangs to control the contest and win.

Catholic's next longest winning streak came just a year ago when the Cardinals won their first 11 games of the season before falling to Salisbury on March 14, 2018 at home. The 12 consecutive wins marks the program's longest streak of victories recorded in the team archives dating back to 1996.

The visitors scored first in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Catholic's first four batters accounted for five of the team's six hits. Cleanup hitter Nolan Lundholm doubled to lead off the second inning and then moved to third on fielder's choice groundout from Michael Doody. Lundholm came home after catcher Will Pyne reached on an error by the shortstop and the Cardinals took a one run lead.

Stevenson responded with a five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth on three hits and two errors to regain the advantage in the game. A steal and a couple wild pitches added two runs in the seventh for the hosts.

Catholic could not get any runs across the plate to get back into the game. Senior Bailey Lewis led the team with two hits including a double. Two consecutive singles from juniors Jeff Guile and Connor Sullivan loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but the Cardinals could not convert with two outs and the rally fell silent.

After losing 8-5 at Robert J. Talbot Field earlier this season, Stevenson won Monday's rematch at home 8-1.

David Gately started on the mound for the Cardinals, giving up three runs in 3.2 innings pitched. Freshman Colin Kehoe pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief. Fellow first year Nick Dziuba and senior Colin Cunningham pitched the seventh and eighth innings, giving up three runs.

The Cardinals' next contest is back at home against Marmount (Va.) on Wednesday, April 24. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Robert J. Talbot Field.
