Cardinals Come From Behind in 8-5 Win Over Mustangs

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - After falling behind early Wednesday afternoon, the Catholic University baseball team rallied to defeat Stevenson 8-5 for its fifth straight win. Junior Nolan Lundholm led the Cardinals with 4 RBIs and junior Christian Jones homered for the second consecutive game.

The Mustangs (14-14) scored three runs in the first two frames to take an early lead at Robert J. Talbot Field, but the Cardinals (16-10) used another huge third inning to take back control of the game.

Sophomore Tighe Watson led off with a single and then classmate Tyler Shaffer walked to get two runners on. After a wild pitch, senior Bailey Lewis tripled to right field to bring home two runs, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Lundholm quickly drove Lewis in with an RBI single to tie the game.

The big inning was not over, however, as Jones sent a two-run homerun over the fence to put Catholic up 5-3. Before Monday, Jones had just one career homerun in two and a half seasons. The junior from Alamo, Calif. now has two in two games this week.

With the lead, a similar trio added onto the lead in the fourth inning. Watson and Shaffer walked with one out and then Lewis singled to load the bases. The senior from Matthews, N.C. now has 14 multi-hit games this season and leads the team with 37 hits and a .385 average. With runners at every base, Lundholm came through again with a two-out RBI single up the middle that drove in two more runs to extend the lead.

A Lundholm sacrifice fly in the eighth added an insurance run to extened the Cardinals' lead to 8-4. A ninth inning run was all Stevenson could muster and Catholic capped the come from behind victory with a first save of from sophomore Ethan Risse

Senior Mason Belcher started on the mound for the Cardinals. Junior Jack Ropelewski picked up his first win of the season in relief after coming in for the third and fourth innings. Junior Eric Moore and Risse also came in for relief innings to preserve the advantage for Catholic's fifth straight win.

Another important weekend approaches for Catholic as the team hosts Landmark foe Moravian. The confernece series starts at Robert J. Talbot Field this Saturday, April 14 at 12:30 p.m.
