Cardinals Come Out on Top in Shootout Over York

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University baseball team stopped a four game skid Wednesday afternoon after coming out on top of a back-and-forth affair against York (Pa.). The Cardinals (10-8) used 14 hits and scored in six of their eight innings to defeat the Spartans in a high-scoring contest, 15-12.

Sophomore Connor Cozad was the big offensive headline with his second HR of the season, but York's four errors led to eight unearned runs. Cozad had two hits including his second homerun of the year and three RBIs, and was joined by Bailey Lewis, Nicholas Torroella, and Connor Sullivan who all had multi-hit games.

The runs started early in the contest, as York scored two in the top of the first, but Catholic answered right away in the bottom half. The top of the lineup kept its momentum going as the first three batters all got on base to start.

Ryan Tracy singled in between walks from Sullivan and Lewis to load the bases quickly. After an RBI groundout, a costly throwing error on a ball put in play by freshman Jason Xiong scored two runs. Two batters later Cozad came up to bat and made York pay with a two-run bomb with two outs to put Catholic up 5-2.

York chased starting pitcher Mason Belcher in the second and scored seven more runs to go back on top. The two teams traded runs as the Cardinals battled back to tie the game at 10-10 in the fifth inning. A sacrifice fly from Tighe Watson scored Torroella and then Cozad later came in to score on a wild pitch to equalize with plenty of game left.

Down 12-11 in the bottom of the eighth, Catholic rallied once again to take the lead. A pinch hit single from Will Pyne tied the game, and then the Nolan Lundholm and Cole Campbell scored on fielder's choice plays to take the lead. A double from Sullivan, his third of the day, added an insurance run to make the game 15-12.

Lundholm scored the game-winning run and earned his first win of the season on the mound in relief after playing the first seven innings at first base. He retired seven of the 10 batters he faced over 2.0 innings, striking out three and allowing just one earned run.

The Cardinals take on conference foe Scranton for a Landmark weekend series starting Saturday, March 30. Catholic hosts Scranton at Robert J. Talbot Field for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m.
