Lundholm Totals Three Hits, Cardinals Swept by Susquehanna

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University baseball junior Nolan Lundholm had three of the Cardinals' 12 hits on the day as they were swept in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at home against Susquehanna at Robert J. Talbot Field.

Catholic (9-5, 2-4) has now dropped four of its last five after being swept by the River Hawks in a three-game series this weekend.

Game 1: Susquehanna 5, Catholic 3

Susquehanna (5-7, 4-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third against Cardinal ace, senior Jon Mierzwa, with a two-out RBI single to right by Peter Yarem before Nick Berger stole home.

The Cardinals got a run back in the bottom of the fourth after sophomore Michael Doody led off the inning with a double to left center and later scored on a River Hawk error with two outs. However, with runners on the corners following two errors and a passed ball, the Cards grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

The River Hawks pushed the lead back to two with an unearned run in the top of the fifth before Catholic tied the game at 3-3 with two unearned runs in the bottom half. Junior Will Pyne was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and sophomore Kendric Musser hit an RBI single to short to score senior Bailey Lewis.

Neither team could get anything going over the next three innings, combining for four hits, before Susquehanna struck again with two outs in the top of the ninth, plating two unearned runs on an RBI singles by Berger and Steve Lorenz.

Leading 5-3, Bobby Grigas, struck out two of the four batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth while allowing just one base runner on an error to earn his first save of the year for the River Hawks. Will Carey improved to 3-3 after scattering three hits over 3.1 scoreless innings while striking out two.

Mierzwa allowed just four hits over 7.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out 10, the seventh time in his career he has struck out at least 10. His career high is 15 set in a 5-1 win over Rutgers Newark on March 11, 2017.

Junior Eric Moore suffered his first loss of the season after allowing two runs on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.

Lundholm went 2-for-3 with a walk while sophomore Tighe Watson was 2-for-4.

Game 2: Susquehanna 17, Catholic 2

Looking for the three-game sweep, the River Hawks scored nine runs over the first three innings, totaling nine runs on nine hits against three Cardinal pitchers and three errors.

Trailing 9-0, Catholic would get two back in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Doody and an RBI single by junior Cid Porter.

However, that would be all the Cardinals' offense could muster while Susquehanna tacked on seven more run over the final three innings to complete the series sweep.

The Cards used nine pitchers in the contest, including freshmen Nick Dziuba, Skylar McLean and Colin Kehoe who all made their first collegiate appearances. Five of the nine pitchers were freshmen as Austin Nappi and Jack Zaffiro also saw action.

Senior David Gately fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing four runs on six hits over 2.0 innings of work. Dillan Weikel picked up his first career win for the River Hawks after scattering four hits over 4.0 innings and allowing two runs and two walks while striking out two and leaving the game with a 9-2 lead.

Catholic is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday against No. 9 Johns Hopkins at home with the first pitch at 3:30 p.m. However, with a 70 percent chance of rain on Monday, that game, as well as Wednesday's rescheduled makeup with York (Pa.), could be affected.
