No. 16 Cardinals Fall to No. 12 Wesleyan (CT) at US Lacrosse

SPARKS, Md. - Wesleyan (CT) scored nine goals on 17 first-half shots while forcing 13 turnovers as the No. 12 Cardinals posted a 14-8 victory over the 16th-ranked Catholic University women's lacrosse team Tuesday at William G. Tierney Field at US Lacrosse Headquarters.

Catholic (2-2) was led by four goals from senior Jess Lyons and four assists from junior Holly Regan. Lyons also added five draw controls while junior Nanci Hernandez had five ground balls, three saves and two caused turnovers.

Abby Manning led Wesleyan (4-0) with five goals and one assist while Caitlin Wood added three goals.

Wesleyan scored the game's first three goals in a span of 9:40 before Catholic answered with three of their own from junior Megan Ellis, junior Julia Clementi and sophomore Anna Maupin, the last two of which were assisted by Regan.

However, Wesleyan closed the half by scoring six of the final seven goals, including three in the final five minutes, to take a 9-4 halftime lead. The visitors then opened the second half with four consecutive tallies, capping a 10-1 run to push their advantage to nine with 18:24 remaining, 13-4.

Catholic scored four of the final five goals, including three from Lyons, with Regan picking up her fourth assist on Lyons' second of the half and third of the game with 6:10 left.

Regan has totaled 17 assists in just four games this season with 15 coming in the last three.

Catholic held a 13-11 edge in shots in the second half along with a 12-4 margin in ground balls but Manning and Wood combined for three of Wesleyan's five goals while Allegra Grant totaled all five of her saves.

Catholic faces its second consecutive top-20 opponent and its third in five games this season when it faces No. 15 Cortland on Saturday at Mount Sinai High School in New York. Opening draw is set for 2 p.m.
