Berger Leads Cardinals Against WPI on Family Weekend

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University football junior Brady Berger threw for a season-high 252 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers as the Cardinals fell to WPI on Family Weekend Saturday at Cardinal Stadium, 52-24.

Catholic (0-6, 0-3 NEWMAC) outscored the Engineers 14-10 in the second half while amassing 136 yards in total offense to 108 for WPI.

In his last two games since returning from injury, Berger has completed 62.6 percent of his passes for 475 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Junior Nick Gonzalez led the Cards with five catches for 76 yards and one score, a 14-yard strike from Berger midway through the third quarter for his first career touchdown. He also finished with 109 all-purpose yards.

Sophomore Preston Jeffrey had three catches for 62 yards and a 25-yard touchdown reception at the end of the first half that capped a 5-play, 75-yard in just 35 seconds for Catholic's first touchdown.

After punts on its first three possessions, the Cardinals scored on four of their next seven, including a 24-yard field goal by sophomore Fabrizio Reilly. He is now 4-for-6 on field goal attempts this season and a perfect 4-for-4 in attempts from 30 yards or less.

Reilly also averaged 31.2 yards on five punts with two over 35 yards and one inside the 20-yard line.

WPI (6-0, 3-0 NEWMAC), who is receiving votes in both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III Coaches and d3football.com Top 25 polls, scored on its first eight possessions and led 28-0 after the first quarter and 42-10 at the break.

Senior Colin McNulty hauled in a 1-yard touchdown from Berger on a play action pass late in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin.

Junior Jake Ballard led the defense with a game-high 11 total tackles, his fourth game out of six this season in double digits. Junior Drew Thomas added eight while sophomore Matt Grant had seven, including one for loss.

Catholic travels to Springfield next Saturday, Oct. 26 for a 1 p.m., kickoff against the Pride.
