No. 24 Catholic Downs Elizabethtown, 6-4

Box Score

WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America baseball team took a series win over Elizabethtown on Sunday afternoon at Talbot Field as the Cardinals defeated the Blue Jays, 6-4.

In a tie game with one out in the seventh inning, senior third baseman Anthony Ferlise came up huge as he delivered a bases-clearing double to put the Cardinals up 6-3 and help seal the victory.

Catholic also got a strong start by sophomore pitcher Ross Dean who went 5.1 innings and allowed just three hits and two runs with four strikeouts. Classmate Jack Ropelewski went two-and-two-thirds for the win while junior Collin Brown came on in the ninth for the save.

It was truly a senior day the plate for the Cardinals as both shortstop Jack Hennessy and first baseman Brennan Cotter delivered with two hits and an RBI while designated hitter Jake Crist came through with a solo home run and two runs scored.

The Catholic bats stayed disciplined as they only struck out twice and walked five times.

Catholic scored in each of the first two innings with RBI from Hennessy and Cotter. Elizabethtown got two back in the second, but Crist's bomb to right center put the Cardinals up again.

The Blue Jays did knot it up again in the seventh, but it only proved to set up Ferlise's heroics.

The Cards will go for their 20th win of the season tomorrow as they travel to Johns Hopkins at 5 p.m.
