Catholic Falls to MIT in NEWMAC Opener, 38-21

Box Score

WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America played the first-ever New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) football game on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium and despite a 21-point second quarter, were topped by MIT, 38-21.

Rookie running back Chance LeGrand had an explosive game with 115 yards on 22 carries with a rushing score. He also added two catches for 14 yards.

Senior safety Luke Kern also turned in a career-best performance with 12 tackles, 1.5 for loss, two interceptions and a pass breakup.

It was MIT who struck first with a 14-point first quarter, but Catholic answered with two-straight one-yard run scores on back-to-back drives from sophomore quarterback Alejandro Ros and LeGrand.

The Engineers got one back with 46 seconds left, but with just six ticks left on the clock, senior Blake Gomez hauled in an 11-yard pass from Ros to cap a six-play, 63-yard drive that took just 36 seconds.

It was all MIT from there however as the Engineers were able to pitch a second-half shutout while adding to more John Robertson rushing scores as well as a field goal for the 38-21 win.

Senior linebacker Anthony Santo posted a game-high 13 tackles while junior cornerback Isaiah Snead racked up 12 stops and added a pass breakup.

Catholic will look to even its NEWMAC record next Saturday when the Cardinals play at Coast Guard at 1:30 p.m.
