Castine, Maine — The Catholic University of America football team earned its fifth win of the season on Saturday at Maine Maritime, 33-14, to even its season-ending record at .500 under first-year head coach Mike Gutelius.

The Mariners struck first on a rushing score, but Catholic rolled with 27-unanswered points to take control and earn the victory.

Freshman quarterback Brady Berger went 22-of-37 for 279 yards and three touchdowns while fellow rookie Chance LeGrand did it all for the Cardinals with 13 rushes for 65 yards, four catches for 52 yards and went 2-for-2 in the air for 26 yards and a passing touchdown.

The Catholic offense racked up 465 yards in the game with 305 passing and 160 on the ground.

Sophomore Colin McNulty scored the first two touchdowns of the game for the Cards on eight and yard passes from Berger and LeGrand, respectively.

On the final play of the half, Berger connected on a 29-yard strike to freshman Trey Carson as the Cardinals took a 21-6 lead into the break.

Catholic got long drives to start the third and sophomore kicker Pearce Bartlett capped both as he connected of field goals of 30 and 25 yards.

Maine Maritime was able to get one back at the end of the third but the Catholic defense was able to stand up the rest of the way before Berger iced the game with a 10-play, 65-yard drive that ended in an eight-yard touchdown catch by senior Greg Holodak with 3:39 remaining.

Senior linebacker Anthony Santo returned for injury and had a team-high 11 tackles and half a sack to lead the defensive charge that limited the Mariners to just 3-of-12 third-down conversions.

Fourth-year defensive lineman Patrick Vidal was second on the team with nine tackles, including one for loss and also forced a fumble in the game. Fellow senior Luke Kern capped his career with five tackle and broke up a pass.

It is the first time in four seasons that the Cards have finished the season at .500 or better.
