Cardinals Top Royals, Earn Third Consecutive Regular Season Title

WASHINGTON - After its 20-10 win over the University of Scranton on Saturday afternoon, The Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team became the Landmark Conference regular season champions for the third consecutive season.

The Cardinals finish the regular season with and unblemished conference record (6-0), forcing all six conference opponent to play with a running clock through the end of regulation.

The Cardinals and Royals battled back and fourth, each scoring four goals in the first 21 minutes of play. Catholic struck first with goals from sophomore Nicolette Crisalli followed by junior Alexis Bosilovic, each assisted by junior Clair Schmitzer. Scranton scored next, but Crisalli put another pass from Schmizter between the pipes to increase Catholics lead to 3-1.

The Royals scored to in a row to tie the game a three before Schmitzer assisted her fourth goal of game, this time with a pass to classmate Ana Brandenburg. Scranton scored their fourth goal, and Catholic answered with six in a row to gain a significant, 10-4, lead.

Scranton got one more in the cage before halftime, but Catholic would have the last goal at the end of the first half increasing their lead to 11-5 at the intermission.

The Royals scored the opening goal of the second half but the Cardinals would outscore them 9-5 in the final 30 minutes, for the 20-10 victory.

Along with Schmitzer's four consecutive first half assists, she scored two goals in the second half for a total of 6 points while causing two turnovers and picking up four ground balls. Crisalli led the Cardinal's offense with six goals and one assist while juniors Laura Dunn, Jenna Van Middelem and Anna Stumme each ripped three shots into the cage.

Freshman Christina De Cesaris earned her seventh in of the 2016 season, making fives saves, while senior Brittnee Frizol finished her regular season career between the pipes with three saves in nine minutes.

The Cardinals will host Drew University in the semi final game of the Landmark Conference Championships on Wednesday, May 4, at 5 p.m.

Prior to Saturday's game Catholic honored the teams three seniors, Alexis Martin, Erin Cavalier, and Frizol.

Over the past four seasons, the women's lacrosse class of 2016 has compiled an overall record of 45-27 to date. They have played in three conference championship games, capturing both the 2014 & 2015 Landmark Titles. Additionally, they have appeared in two NCAA Tournaments, including hosting the second round and advancing to the Regional Finals in 2015.
