Cardinals Down Mustangs 9-3

Box Score

WASHNGTON - Amidst the spring showers The Catholic University of America baseball team rallied from a three run deficit with six runs in the bottom of the fourth to down Stevenson University 9-3 on Tuesday afternoon.

The win advances the Cardinals to 13-4-1 in 2015 while the Mustangs drop to 8-9-2 on the season.

CUA's Chris Nardone made his first career start for the Cards, pitching four innings and throwing five strikeouts. Josh Martin picked up the win for Catholic after pitching four innings, giving up zero runs, and tossing two strikeouts. Ian Moss pitched the final inning of the game to close out the Cardinal win.

Catholic gave up an early run in the first inning and two more in the top of the fourth to trail Stevenson 3-0, but the early deficit would not stop the Cards. In the bottom of the fourth Catholic made it through it's entire line up, earning six runs before the end of the inning.

The Mustang pitching looked to be in trouble in the fourth inning. With just one out Eric Scamardella was walked to first followed by Paul Burmester being hit by a pitch and a wild pitch advanced the runners into scoring position. Andrew Stewart sent a single into right field to bring home both runners and cut the CUA deficit to one.

With Stewart on first, trailing 3-2, David Gately sent the ball on the ground down the right field line to earn a hit while Stewart advanced to third. Dan Hinchcliff followed with an RBI single to left field, and Brennan Cotter stepped into the batter's box launching a triple to right center for CUA's fourth and fifth runs of the afternoon. John Palladino came to the plate next and cranked a double to score Cotter before the Mustangs could end the inning.

Stewart earned another single in the fifth inning and advanced to third on a hit from Gatley. Gatley stole second to put himself in scoring position with Stewart. After a Mustang pitching change, Hinchcliff hit a 2-RBI single to score the runners and bring the Catholic lead to 8-3.

The Cards capped of the rainy event with one more run in the eighth off a sacrifice fly from Scamardella to bring home Palladino to finish out with a 9-3 score in the teams first 2015 appearance at Robert J. Talbot Field.

The Cardinals will return to Robert J. Talbot Field on Wednesday, April 1 at 3:30 for a match up against No. 10 Randolph-Macon.
