Catholic Sees First Loss of Season to E-Town

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America baseball team suffered their first loss of the 2015 season 11-4 against Elizabethtown College, in a Landmark Conference match up on Saturday night.

The loss drops the Cards to an 8-1-1 in 2015 and 3-1 in the conference while the Blue Jays advance to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in the Landmark.

E-town earned the first run of the night in the top of the first inning. CUA answered in the bottom of the second to tie the game, with Eric Scamardella on third Dan Hinchcliff sent an RBI grounder to the shortstop to see 1-1 on the scoreboard.

With two innings down and the game tied the Blue Jays made their move. The Blue Jays saw seven hits and four walk to bring home nine run in the top of the third inning and capped off their win with a run in the fifth.

Trailing E-town 11-1 the Cards looked to rally in the bottom of the fifth scoring two runs. The first off a triple from Stefan Poggioli to drive in Brett Padula and the second from a John Palladino grounder to second base to send Poggioli home. CUA scored one more in the seventh when Andrew Stewart came in after Palladino reached first base on the Blue Jay's fielding error. The rally wasn't enough and the scoreboard read 11-4 at the end of the ninth.

The Cardinals exhausted five pitchers in the nine inning showcase. Jack Hennessy made the start and was charged with the loss after throwing 2.1 innings with six hits, seven earned runs, three walks and three strikeouts. Mark Duffy saw .2 innings while Christopher Hutton took the mound for two innings and threw two K's. Josh Martin saw one inning with three walk and three strikeouts, and Sean Carroll closed out the final three innings with one K.

Catholic continues the three-game conference series against Elizabethtown with a double header on Sunday, March 22 at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in Washington, D.C. First pitch is at noon, game two will follow 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
