Cardinals Dominate Penn State Harrisburg, Hood in Double Header

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America baseball team wrapped up their 2015 spring break trip on Wednesday, March 11, with a dominating 19-5 win over Penn State Harrisburg, and a 9-5 victory over Hood College and now sits 5-0 in the 2015 season.

During the Wednesday afternoon showing the Cardinals banked six runs in the second inning to gain the lead over the Lions. With another 11 runs in the fourth inning followed by one in the fifth and sixth CUA secured their 19-5 win over PSH.

Over the eight and a half inning game the Cards saw 14 different runs scorers. Wyatt Schmidt along with Stefan Paggioli, Eric Scamardella, and Jake Crist led the pack each scoring two runs in the 19 run show.

The Cards launched 3 doubles in the bottom of the fourth to reel in 11 runs. Paggioli hit a double to right field to score Schmidt and Paul Burmester followed with a double of his own to drive in Paggioli. Matt Hsiung rounded out the 11-run fourth inning with a double to right field to bring home Alec Dolton.

Leading off the bottom of the sixth, Mike Iglesia doubled with a grounder to left field for his first career hit as a Catholic Cardinal.

Three RBI's came from Anthony Ferlise and John Palladino while Jake Crist, Burmester, and Paggioli each drove in two. Dan Hinchcliff, Bo Williams, Scamardella, and Hsiung each drove in one RBI to contribute to the Cardinals 19-run performance.

Three Catholic pitchers took the mound with Christopher Hutton making the start, throwing two strike outs and earning the win. Kyle Hassan pitched three innings and threw three K's while Ian Moss struck out two batters in his single inning on the rubber.

In the team's second outing of the day the Cards took an early advantage in the first inning off a single from Crist to bring in Poggioli.

Hood equalized the score, 1-1, in the top of the second but with back-to-back four-run innings in the fourth and fifth the Cards maintained the lead for the remainder of the night.

Hood answered the four-run top of the fifth with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning but were unable to bring any additional runners across the plate thought the last three inning, ending the game 9-5 in favor of Catholic.

Ferlise drove in two runs for the Cards against the Blazers, while David Gately, Crist, and Hsiung each brought home one RBI.

The Cardinals return to the nation's capital to open Landmark Conference play on Saturday, March, 14 against Moravian at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, 3675 Ely Place SE, Washington, DC 20019.
