CUA Edged in Shootout With Guilford, 52-49

Box Score

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America football team combined with Guilford for one of the most prolific offensive games in the ODAC this season, totaling 1,238 yards, 175 plays and 101 points in a shootout on Saturday afternoon. It was the final home game of 2015 at Cardinal Stadium and despite a season-best offensive output, CUA was edged, 52-49.

Quarterback T.J. Tutone had a career performance for the Cardinals on senior day, setting a personal best with six touchdowns, throwing for five while adding a rushing score. Tutone threw for a season-high 394 yards, the second-highest output of his career, and added 59 yards on the ground for a career-high 453 total yards.

Although Tutone is the ODAC leader in passing yards and completions, he faced off against a Guilford QB that now leads the league with 32 touchdowns. Matt Pawlowski had a record-setting day, passing for 611 yards and seven touchdowns.

Catholic trailed by 17 with only 18 minutes to play, but Tutone's rushing score with no time left in the third, which saw the CUA quarterback make a highlight reel dive into the endzone as he was spun in midair, made it a 10-point game.

Guilford's advantage remained until the final five minutes when Tutone found Lucas Morley for one of his 11 catches and a 17-yard touchdown to make it just a three-point game.

The Quakers were once again able to answer, but the Cardinals continued to fight back, as Billy Smith scored on a four-yard reception with 34 seconds to go. Smith also had a career day, going for 76 yards and three touchdowns.

Down by three and with only seconds left, CUA attempted the onside kick, but Guilford was able to field it cleanly and kneel out the clock to come away with the win.

Catholic now ends the season with back-to-back games on the road beginning with Washington & Lee next Saturday.
