Box Score WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America field hockey team faced a three-goal deficit in a nationally-ranked matchup against No. 6 Ursinus on Tuesday night at Cardinal Stadium, but made an impressive second half surge. Trailing by three scores with just 20 minutes to play, No. 18 CUA scored twice in a minute and a half, but were stopped from finding the equalizer as time expired, falling 3-2.
Ursinus took a 1-0 lead 25 minutes into the first half and held the advantage into the break. The Bears then scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the second stanza, building what seemed like a strong lead.
The Cardinals turned on the attack however as rookie Lane Adams scored unassisted off a penalty corner to put Catholic on the board.
Just 90 second later, senior Ellen Thorburn took the ball in close to the far post and beat the Bears' keeper to make it just a one-goal game.
CUA kept pressing and aimed for the game-tying score, but Ursinus' defense was able to stand and hold on for the hard-fought victory.
Catholic was outshot in the game 21-7 and faced a 16-4 deficit on penalty corners, but junior goalkeeper Analisa Scott kept the Cards in it all game long as she made 10 saves for head coach Gia Cillizza.
CUA plays its regular season finale in a huge Landmark matchup against Juniata on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., with playoff seeded and a potential regular season conference title on the line.
