Box Score WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's soccer team overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to outscore Goucher College 5-1 in a Landmark Conference victory Wednesday afternoon. The win advances the Cardinals to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play while the Gophers drop to 7-5-2, 1-3.
The Gophers notched a goal at the 13:09 minute mark to take a 1-0 lead, giving the Cardinals an early scare and maintaining the lead through the halftime intermission.
The Cardinals came back to the field after the break with a fresh take on the game, outshooting the Gophers 16-2 in the second half. With four different goal scorers, CUA capitalized on five unanswered goals in 22 minutes to earn their fourth conference win of the year.
Catholics' tying goal came in the 67th minute after being awarded a throw in. Freshman Jillian Sudo's toss landed on the foot of fellow freshman Taylor Pisk. From the left side of the field, Pisk tapped the ball to junior Lindsay Aleman who fired it into the top right corner of the net. The Card's go-ahead goal came 10 minutes later when senior Ava Brown served a corner kick to the head of Pisk, who sent it straight inside the left post.
With less than ten minutes to play and a victory in sight, sophomore Andrea Jablonskyj took control of the game to secure the CUA win. In the 81st minute Jablonskyj lobbed the ball over the Goucher keeper's head from outside the left corner of the 18-yard box, giving Catholic a 3-1 advantage.
Jablonskyj followed with back to back assists in the 83rd and 89th minute to round out the Cardinal's scoring. CUA's fourth goal came off a cross to senior Kirsten Wosleger who chipped the ball into the net, while their final goal was knocked in off the head of Aleman.
With the game's final goal, Aleman notched her 13th goal of the season and 33rd of her Catholic University career. The goal moves the junior into the third spot for most career goals in CUA women's soccer program history. Aleman now sits behind Laura Kaye '05, with 49 goals, and Jenny Aspinwall '04, with 44 career goals. Additionally, she is just one goal shy of tying her personal best of 14 goals in a season, set last year.
Senior Lexi Halperin earned her 11th win of the season, recording two saves during the event. Aleman led the offense with seven shots while Sudo and Jablonskyj each took four.
The Cardinals continue conference play on Saturday, Oct. 17, when they travel to Scranton, Pa., to go head-to-head with the Royals at 3:30 p.m. The Cardinals and Royals are both currently undefeated against Landmark Conference competition.
