WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic
University of America women's soccer team (4-0) furthered their
winning streak with a 6-0 shutout over the Cabrini Cavaliers (1-2),
by far their most impressive win so far this season.
"I am pleased with today's result," said CUA head
women's soccer coach J.P. Sousa. "We played a solid game from
beginning to end in very hot and uncomfortable conditions. A lot of
players got time and contributed to this win."
With 15 shots on goal, Catholic trumped Cabrini's
defense and took their enormous lead with almost no resistance.
Four separate CUA women's soccer student-athletes contributed to
the win.
"Cabrini is a team with NCAA tournament experience
the past three years, so we prepared for a battle. We want to
compete with teams like this before we begin our conference season
at the end of the month," said Sousa
Senior Kaylre Greaves
earned her third opening goal in the last four games, putting the
Cards up 1-0 early in the first half. Greaves totaled four shots
with four additional shots on goal, leading the Lady Cards' offense
in speed.
Catholic's explosive energy after halftime produced
an additional five goals, three of which came unassisted. Sophomore
Lindsay
Aleman extended the team's lead within the first two minutes of
the second half, putting the Lady Cards up 2-0. Freshman forward Nia Gomez
responded two minutes later with an unassisted goal, and was
followed by Aleman's second goal of the outing. Sophomore Alyssa Fiore
earned an assist on Aleman's second goal as CUA went ahead 4-0
against the Cavaliers. Greaves scored her second goal of the day in
the 76th minute, extending Catholic's lead to five. Alexis Garcia
tacked on the final goal within three remaining minutes of the
game, as Gomez was credited with the assist.
While the team's offense made an outstanding
appearance, Catholic's defense kept Cabrini out of their zone and
goal. Junior goalkeeper Lexi Halperin
made two saves as the Cavaliers managed only 11 shots in 90:00
min.
"Everyone is happy to start the year with four
wins, but we all understand that this is just the beginning. We can
enjoy this win this weekend, but on Monday our focus turns to our
next game at St Mary's (Md.)," said Sousa.
The Lady Cardinals now hold a 4-0-0 record, and
will travel to face St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday, September 10 at
4:00 p,m.
