WASHINGTON- The Lady Cardinals of
Catholic University women's soccer team recorded its third shutout
victory of the season, as they took an impressive 6-0 win Tuesday,
September 23 over the University of Mary Washington Eagles on the
CUA Soccer Field.
Catholic dominated offensively for two halves,
totaling 18 shots. Despite the low number of corner kicks, the Lady
Cardinals kept the ball on their half of the field for almost the
entire 90:00 minutes.
The team's first goal came within the first four
minutes of play, as sophomore Lindsay Aleman
scored off a pass from fellow sophomore Alyssa Fiore.
Aleman struck again in front of the net to put Catholic up 2-0 with
junior Kirsten
Wosleger on the assist. Junior Ava Brown sailed the
Lady Cards' third goal over the keeper from 45 yards, increasing
Catholic's lead to three heading into halftime.
Catholic began the second half stronger than their
first-half start, determined to keep Mary Washington off the
scoreboard. CUA kept the Eagles to a meager five shots, with no
corner kick opportunities. Junior goalkeeper Lexi Halperin
played a complete game in goal for CUA recording three saves on the
day.
Wosleger made her second goal in two straight
games, once again capitalizing on a rebound of an Eagles' defender.
Up 4-0, the Lady Cardinals were not finished. Brown pulled Mary
Washington's goalkeeper Charlotte Owens from the goal off a
Catholic corner, passing the ball to sophomore Sarah Madden for
a header goal. Catholic tacked on one more, as Aleman scored her
third goal of the outing. A one-on-one face-off with Owens
finalized the score 6-0, as the Cardinals won their second game at
home.
"I'm proud of the way this team played today. For the
first time in the past couple weeks, we put together a complete 90
minutes. Lindsay got us going early with two quick goals and
another shot off the crossbar, then we stay focused on keeping
possession and controlling the game. The second half was
important for us to not let up in any way and I think we did a good
job," said CUA Head Women's Soccer Coach JP Sousa.
The Lady Cardinals now hold a 6-1-2 record, giving
the Eagles their second loss of this 2014 season. Catholic will
host Elizabethtown on Saturday, September 27, at 1:00 p.m. on the
CUA Soccer Field.
