Cardinals Fall to No. 7 Franklin & Marshall in NCAA Second Round

WASHINGTON - Franklin & Marshall used a 9-4 second half to knock off Catholic 17-11 in the NCAA Second Round in Lancaster, Pa. on Saturday afternoon.

Lindsay Brophy led the Cardinals offensively with three goals and four assists for seven points while Anna Stumme scored a game-high four goals.

Originally scheduled to begin at 4:00, the game was moved to 3:30 due to thunderstorms expected in the area. Just minutes before the opening whistle, heavy rain and wind moved overhead and the Diplomats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead by the 27:52 mark.

The rain cleared and the Cardinals were able to gain composure and rattle off two goals to cut the deficit to one. Laura Dunn set up Brophy for the first goal of the game then Brophy assisted Stumme for a 3-2 score at 24:04.

F&M answered back as Caroline Krohn scored her second goal of the game for a 4-2 lead.

Brophy threaded a pass into Stumme whose shot hit the bottom of the crossbar before finding the back of the net. Another Diplomat goal pushed the margin back up to two.

Jenna Van Middelem burst through the defense and placed a shot in the bottom right corner to cut it to one then Laura Dunn ripped a shot just under the crossbar to tie the game at 5-5 at the midway point of the first half.

The two squads went back and forth on the next four scores as Dunn scored another unassisted goal and Madeline Wilson assisted Brophy for a 7-7 score with 6:54 to play.

Neither team was able to score for the next five minutes until F&M got through the CUA defense with under a minute to play to take a 8-7 lead into halftime.

F&M opened the second half scoring less than a minutes into the action. Brophy responded with her third goal of the game.

Back-to-back goals by F&M pushed the lead to 11-8.

Stumme connected on a free position shot then two minutes later took a feed from Brophy and fired a shot which hit the crossbar then took a bounce into the goal at 21:23 for a 11-10 score.

F&M held the Cardinals scoreless for 15 minutes and went on a 5-0 run to pull away for a 16-10 score. Anastasia Brandenburg finished a shot from Brophy for the final CUA tally at 6:32.

The Diplomats scored at 2:34 for the final score of the game and a 17-11 win.

For the game, Catholic outshot the Diplomats 29-27 and also had a 27-20 advantage in ground balls. Alexis Bosilovic had seven draw controls and Clair Schmitzer had six as CUA led F&M 18-12 in that category.

Yasmeen Ajdari and Scmitzer each had a game-high five ground balls, while Caroline DiBartolomeo had four.
