Box Score WASHINGTON – The Catholic baseball team declined to 1-2 on the season after dropping a 9-6 decision the Hornets of Randolph-Macon on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cardinals were the first to points on the board. Paul Burmester, who made it to first by a walk and advanced to second, made it to home plate off of a single to center field by John Palladino in the top of the second.
In spite of striking first, the host sluggers went on to score nine unanswered runs, tallying one run in the bottom of the third, two in the bottom of the fourth and five in the bottom of the sixth.
Both squads were scoreless in the seventh inning. At the top of the eighth, CUA went up against Austin Mostoller at the mound, who relieved Tanner Phillips and went on to score five runs.
CUA concluded the contest with 11 hits on two errors, as R-MC recorded seven hits and one error. Individually, Nick Clary, Dan Hinchcliff and Burmester registered one double apiece, while Palladino and Burmester notched two RBIs apiece. Defensively, first baseman Eric Scamardella tallied nine putouts, with Clary assisting on four.
With four innings from the mound, Andrew Carroll recorded his first loss, as Jamie Hendrick obtained his third win of the season.
Catholic will welcome Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, March 1 for the 2014 home opener. The doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Robert J. Talbot Field.
