Box Score Salisbury, Md. – It was an outstanding Tuesday for The Catholic University of America field hockey team, as the Cardinals moved up two slots in the NFHCA poll to the No. 12 slot and wrapped up the day by upsetting the No. 1 Salisbury Sea Gulls in Salisbury, Md.
With the win, CUA improves to 9-1 on the season and extends their win streak to five games, as Salisbury records it first loss of the season and drops to 9-1 on the year
Maura Campbell put the Cards up by one when she scored from the top right corner of the circle on a penalty corner entered by Ellen Thorburn, who was credited with the assist.
Analisa Scott held the one-point lead into the halftime intermission when she recorded a phenomenal save at the 32
nd mark.
By the half, Catholic had taken two shots and both were on goal, while Salisbury took six and with three on goal.
The Cardinal defense held the Sea Gulls scoreless until the 59th minute. Abbey Shobe tipped the goal pass Scott on initial stroke by SU's Mallory Elliott to tie the game.
CUA answered back with two goals for a 3-1 lead. Ellen Thorburn finished up an initial shot from Rebecca Lukaszczyk to break the tie, followed by an unassisted goal from Lukaszczyk to seal the win.
Catholic University wrapped up the contest with nine shots and eight on goal, while Salisbury went for 14 shots and six on goal.
Scott, who played all 70 minutes in the cage, tallied five saves.
The Cardinals return to Landmark Conference action for the next four games. Beginning with a 1:00 p.m. home contest against the Drew Rangers on Saturday, October 11 and a Tuesday, October 15 game at Cardinal Stadium against the Goucher Gophers at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, October 18, CUA heads to The University of Scranton for a 1:00 p.m. game, and wraps up by returning home to face the Susquehanna Crusaders on Saturday, October 25 also at 1:00 p.m.
"The team showed that when it brings high level effort and intensity, we are capable of great performances," said head field hockey coach Gia Cillizza. "There were many good plays from Analisa to the backs to the midfield and right up through the forward line. A total team effort to beat one of the best programs in the country on the road. We are enjoying it today but we will get back to work -- there is still much to do."
Notes: Today's win marks the second consecutive season that CUA has defeated Salisbury as a higher ranked team and the second time the Cardinals have recorded a win when the Sea Gulls were ranked No. 1.
Catholic defeated Salisbury on September 18, 2013, 1-0. Salisbury was ranked No. 3, while Catholic was ranked No. 20. And on October 25, 2011, the then ranked No. 1 Sea Gulls fell 2-1 to the unranked Cards.
