Box Score WASHINGTON – Ben Powers and Matt McMahon scored one touchdown each in the fourth quarter to offset a potential shut out to the Hampden-Sydney Tigers. For The Catholic University of America Cardinals first Old Dominion Athletic Conference loss of the year.
The 62-14 loss drops CUA to 2-2 overall (0-1 ODAC), while H-SC improves to 3-1 on the year (1-0 in the conference).
After trailing 62-0, CUA quarterback TJ Tutone found Powers on three-yard pass with 3:48 remaining in the fourth quarter to complete the Cardinals longest drive of the day of 10 plays for 65 yards.
McMahon scored the final CUA touchdown on an eight-yard keeper in the last eight seconds of the fourth.
While, the Cardinals took hold of the final four minutes of play, the previous 56 minutes went to Hampden-Sydney.
The Tigers scored eight touchdowns and made good on two field goals for 62 points and 473 yards of total offense.
HSC's Mac Antwerpes opened the afternoon with a 29-yard field goal at the 3:57 mark of the first quarter. In the final 50-seconds of the first, Holton Walker caught a 35-yard pass from Nash Nance for the Tigers' first touchdown of the day and a 10-0 HSC lead.
Later, Nance capped a four-play drive of 30 yards with a 19-yard keeper at the 14-minute mark of the quarter. The visiting quarterback then added another touchdown with a one-yard run to conclude a seven-play, 55-yard drive giving HSC a 24-0 lead.
The Tigers' quarterback returned to the pocket and connected with Joey Druhan for a 23-yard touchdown pass at the end of a three-play, 34 yard drive in the second quarter. HSC's Brady Macko scored the last touchdown of the frame with three-yard run at the end of 10 plays for 38-0 lead at the 7:46 mark. With one second remaining before halftime, Antwerpes made good on a 25-yard field goal, putting the visiting foes ahead 41-0.
Hampden-Sydney continued to flourish with a seven-yard run from Macko to finish a five-play, 30-yard drive just three minutes into the third quarter.
On the fourth CUA interception, HSC extended their lead to 55-0 on 29-yard return by Robert Sack at the 6:57 of the third.
Jake Edmonds concluded the Tigers scoring output with a one-yard run within the first 45 seconds of the fourth stanza quarter.
Catholic put together 264 yards of total offense with 161 yards passed and 103 yards on the ground. Tutone was 17-of-35 for 154 yards. Matt Perno continues to lead the rushing attack, this time finishing the day with 43 total yards on 15 carries, as Nikolas Echeverria caught four passes for 69 yards. Despite their efforts, CUA tallied four fumbles and four interceptions, as HSC held the squad to a mere 12 first downs.
Dave Zarkoski guided the defensive line with nine tackles alongside seven total tackles from Vinny Caniglia, while Matthew Barton, Patrick Thomas and Bill McClatchy each tallied six take downs apiece.
Catholic travels to Randolph Macon in Ashland, Va., on Friday, October 10 for a 6:00 p.m. game.
Notes: Today's loss marks the largest margin defeat to Hampden-Sydney in the 25-game series history and the Marty Favret era, who is a 1984 graduate of Catholic University.
