Box Score Collegeville, Pa. – The No. 8 Catholic University field hockey team earned its first double overtime win of the season with a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Ursinus on Tuesday at Elanor Frost Snell Field.
With the season's fourth win over a NFHCA ranked program, the Cardinals improve to 14-1 on the year (6-0 Landmark Conference). Ursinus falls to 13-3 this season.
Catholic's Keira McGovern scored the only goal of the first half in the 11th minute. McGovern's high-arching shot just inside the circle was assisted by Marissa Martinelli for a 1-0 lead at the half.
After the breather, Ursinus' Megan Keenan scored two back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead. At the 36:45 minute mark, Keenan scored a shot into the ride side of the box off of a corner. Her goal that went past CUA's goalkeeper Analisa Scott was assisted by the Bear's Kelsey Reed and Danielle Stong. In the 40th minute of the second half, Keenan scored a goal off of a rebound for the lead.
Over the next 21 minutes, Catholic took three shots and were awarded four penalty corners in an attempt to tie the contest and take the lead. Rebecca Lukaszyzck turned the game around and tied the contest 2-2 at the 61:51 minute mark. She found the left side of the box on a pass from the top of the circle from Keira McGovern.
UC made every effort to regain the lead firing six shots over the final eight minutes of action. The Bear's first shot went wide, CUA's Scott made one save and the squad blocked the other four attempts made leaving the game gridlocked 2-2 at the end of regulation.
Neither team was able to manufacture a goal in the first overtime. Catholic and Ursinus each took five shots with the Bears leading the penalty corner category 3-1.
After taking nine shots and being awarded four penalty corners, Catholic secured the win in the 93rd minute. Hayley Wright tipped in a pass from McGovern for a 3-2 win over the Ursinus.
Catholic fired 27 shots (14 on goal), as Ursinus took 28 shots (11 on target).
Scott made eight saves for the Cardinals in her 95 minutes of cage action, as Ursinus' Danielle DeSpirito made 10 saves.
CUA heads to Juniata on Saturday, November 1 for the last regular-season game of the season. The contest is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Notes: Catholic entered the contest ranked No. 8 for the second week in a row by the NFHCA and No. 1 in NCAA Division III South Atlantic Region. Ursinus is ranked No. 6 in the NFHCA and No. 2 in the NCAA Division III South Region.
Juniata is ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division III South Atlantic Region with a record of 10-3.
