Box Score WASHINGTON – The Catholic University women's soccer
team got back in the win column with a 1-0 non-conference victory
over York College on Wednesday, Sept. 25 in York, Pa.
Catholic and York were evenly matched as the teams headed into
halftime at 0-0. The Cardinals outshot the Spartans 9-to-4 in the
first stanza.
The red and black continued to attack the York defense, as Lindsay Aleman (Hockessin, Del./Wilmington Friends)
made a great pass just inside the box to Kaylre Greaves (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) who was
able to finish 1-v-1 against the York goalie.
Greaves' goal in the 82nd minute proved to be all
that was needed as the Cardinals were able to fend off the Spartans
for the remainder of the game.
The goal was Greaves' team-leading fifth goal of
the year, and first game-winner for the junior.
Goalkeeper Amy-Lynn Friel (Westampton, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep)
came up huge for the Cardinals in the final moments of the game,
denying York a 1-v-1 opportunity. In her second career start,
Friel picked up six saves and recorded a shutout.
After dropping the previous two games, today's win gives
the Cardinals some momentum heading into Saturday's
conference-opener against Drew.
“We played a more complete game today, which is exactly
what we need heading into our first conference contest of the
season” said CUA coach J.P. Sousa.
The Cardinals (5-4) return to action this Saturday, Sept. 28 on
Homecoming weekend when they welcome Drew (7-1) to Washington D.C.
for the squad's first Landmark Conference match. Kickoff is
scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
