WASHINGTON – The Catholic University women's soccer team fell 1-0 to visiting Gettysburg College on Thursday, Sept. 12 in Washington, D.C.

It was a hot afternoon, and both teams were finishing up their warm-ups before heavy storm clouds swept through the area with heavy lightning, forcing the game to be delayed. Each team was forced to retreat to the DuFour Athletic Center, where they waited for two and a half hours before the lightning cleared and the go-ahead was given by CUA officials.

Since the CUA Soccer Field does not have the proper lighting to host a night match, the teams reconvened at Cardinal Stadium, where they played the match on turf for the first time this season, kicking off just before 7:00 p.m.

The weather delay did not phase the Bullets, as Molly Phillips put Gettysburg on the board just 3:24 minutes into the game, which would be the only goal necessary for the win.

Gettysburg controlled most of the action in the first half, firing off eight shots to Catholic's one.

The Cardinal's defense was able to regroup at halftime and limit the Bullets to just two second half shots.

The Cardinals have been shutout now in back-to-back games.

CUA women's soccer coach J.P. Sousa is not worried about the drought though. "We've created chances in every game, we just need to finish them. I know we are going to score more goals. We have to react differently against these better teams" said Sousa.

Catholic (3-2) returns to action this Sunday, Sept. 15 at 11:00 a.m. against Whittier College (0-3) in Washington, D.C.

The Cardinals entered tonight's game after breaking into the Top 10 Regional rankings for the first time this season, entering at the No. 9 spot in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional poll. Gettysburg is currently ranked No. 5 in the same regional poll
