Cardinals clinch tournament berth with big win at Goucher

Box Score

TOWSON, Md. – CUA breezed past Goucher on Saturday afternoon, downing the Gophers 22-10. Six Cardinals scored multiple goals on the day, led by Lindsay Brophy with six. With the win, the five-time defending Landmark Conference champions clinch a berth in this year's tournament, which gets underway next month.

CUA jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Brophy in the first 4:05 of the game.

Following Goucher's first goal, Caroline DiBartolomeo gave the Cards a 3-1 advantage with a free position goal.

CUA then added four more goals in a span of 1:39 to open up a 7-1 lead with 19:30 to play before halftime. Brophy scored two of the goals, while Meghan O'Brien and Theresa Ciletti also got on the board.

Erin Reifsnyder temporarily stopped the Cards run with Goucher's second goal at the 19:07 mark, but CUA again responded in a big way, ripping off four more goals to go in front 11-2 with 14:27 on the clock.

Nicole Laitner, DiBartolomeo, Katie Miller and Ciletti were responsible for the scoring this time.

Anneke Ossorio made it 11-3 with a goal at the 13:55 mark, but goals by Samantha Hawkins and Laitner in less than a minute pushed the lead up to 10.

Later, CUA received goals from Mary Clare Regan and Miller and headed to halftime with a commanding 15-5 lead.

The scoring did not stop after intermission, with Regan and Ciletti finding the back of the net in the first 3:25 to make it a 12-goal spread.

Two straight scores by the Gophers made it a 10-goal game, but a free position score by Brophy with 12:04 to play gave the Cardinals a 19-8 advantage.

In the final five minutes, Brophy, Miller and Laitner added goals as CUA pumped in a season-best 22 on the day.

The Cardinals finished with a 35-21 advantage in shots and 22-12 in draw controls. CUA was also 12 of 13 in clear attempts. Brophy and Kelly Neligan led the Cards with four ground balls apiece, while Alissa Norris, Brophy and Adair Douglas were the team leaders in caused turnovers with two.

Tricia Pehnke got the win in goal, stopping six shots in 38 minutes of work, while Victoria Sudjian and Brittnee Frizol finished things off, combining for two stops.

CUA remains on the road for its next game, traveling to Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon to face Gettysburg. The opening draw is set for 4:30 p.m.

The Cardinals then host Susquehanna on Saturday, April 20, with the winner likely earning the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
