No. 18 Cardinals bounce back with 11-9 win on Senior Day

Box Score

WASHINGTON – After falling behind 3-0 to Washington and Lee on Saturday, CUA regrouped and came away with an 11-9 win on Senior Day. Lindsay Brophy led the way with four goals, while Emily Downs and Katie Miller added two each. Tricia Pehnke made 16 saves on the afternoon, including 12 in the first half.

The Generals jumped in front 3-0, but it took them 20 minutes to score those three goals. Pehnke had nine saves during that span, doing her part to keep the Cards in it.

Miller got CUA on the board for the first time when she scored at the 7:38 mark, and less than a minute later, Brophy pulled the Cards to within one with her first goal.

With 2:08 remaining in the half, Nicole Laitner tied things with a free position goal, but Meade Brewster responded for Washington and Lee to give the Generals the lead.

Brophy tied the score at four with her second goal with 1:06 to play, and then Miller gave CUA its first lead of the day when she scored with 24 ticks on the clock.

The back-and-forth continued when Margaret Klein scored less than two minutes into the second half to tie things at five.

The Generals went back in front on Carly Taglienti's free position shot two minutes later, but Brophy answered to pull the Cardinals even with 21:22 on the clock.

Brophy went back-to-back to give CUA a 7-6 lead, only to see Margaret Pascale tie the score yet again, with 15:06 remaining.

The Cardinals bounced right back though, and pulled in front with three straight goals, as Emily Downs, Caroline DiBartolomeo and Mary Clare Regan put CUA on top 10-7 in a span of only 1:21.

Washington and Lee continued to make things interesting, scoring two straight, to make it a 10-9 game with 5:53 left to play, but Brophy fed Downs for a goal seven seconds later, and CUA was able to hang on from there.

Pehnke made two more saves down the stretch to help the Cards win their third game of 2013.

CUA was credited with 27 shots on the afternoon and scooped up 21 ground balls, led by Brophy and Caroline Scalamandre with three apiece.

Prior to the game, CUA honored the four members of its senior class, including Katie Miller, Kelly Neligan, Darcy Resch, and Caroline Scalamandre.

CUA hits the road for its next contest, heading to Mary Washington on Tuesday afternoon. Start time is set for 4 p.m.

The Cardinals then open conference play on Thursday when they play host to Scranton. The opening draw will be at 1.
