Box Score ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – CUA dropped a 14-13 heartbreaker to
Elizabethtown in double overtime on Saturday afternoon. The
Cardinals trailed by two with less than 10 minutes remaining in
regulation, but battled back to force OT, before falling in the
extra session. Freshman Maddy Nowakowski scored five goals for CUA,
while Nicole Laitner added four.
CUA led 6-5 at halftime and quickly extended to an 8-5 advantage
with back-to-back scores by Nowakowski early in the 2nd.
The Blue Jays countered with two straight goals of their own,
pulling to within one with 23:01 on the clock.
Laitner struck next for CUA, scoring her 8th goal of the season to
again make the spread two.
Elizabethtown then answered with two straight goals to tie the
score at nine with 16:08 remaining, but Mary Clare Regan put the
Cards back on top with an unassisted goal a minute later.
An Elizabethtown goal with 9:08 on the clock tied things at 10 and
the Blue Jays added two more scores to go in front 12-10 with 8:11
to play.
CUA was far from done however, as Nowakowski took a feed from
Lindsay Brophy and scored with 3:55 to go to pull the Cards within
one, and Brophy got the equalizer two minutes later to tie the
score and send the game into overtime.
In the first extra session, Laitner gave CUA the lead with her 9th
goal of 2013, but the Blue Jays tied things less than a minute
later.
With 5:31 remaining in the second overtime period, Leigh
Flounlacker netted her sixth goal of the afternoon to send the Blue
Jays to victory.
After Elizabethtown scored the game's first goal, Nowakowski
got CUA on the board less than a minute later.
The teams then traded goals, before Laitner put CUA in front 3-2
with a goal at the 22:27 mark.
Brophy followed with a score of her own and the Cards went in
front by two.
The Blue Jays came back with two straight to tie the score at
four, but Laitner gave the lead right back to CUA with her 7th goal
of the season.
Nowakowski then made it 6-4 CUA, before Elizabeth Grosso closed
the 1st half scoring out to pull the Blue Jays within one.
CUA finished with a 40-31 advantage in shots, and a 33-30 lead in
ground balls.
On Monday, CUA plays the first of three straight home games when
the Cardinals welcome Babson to town. Start time is set for 4
p.m.
