FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior Andrew Carroll threw 5.1 innings of one-run ball, while sophomore Nick Clary went 2 for 4 at the dish with three runs batted in to lead CUA to a 4-1 win over Mary Washington in the season opener on Wednesday.

After having their first two games postponed due to weather, the Cardinals looked more than ready to play, as Carroll and classmate Robin Mowatt combined on a four-hitter.

Carroll allowed just the one run, while striking out three and allowing only three hits. Mowatt then came in and worked the final 3.2 innings, whiffing two and allowing a single hit.

CUA wasted little time in jumping ahead in this one, loading the bases with two outs in the top of the 1st.

Clary then delivered a bases clearing double, bringing home Mark Kalokitis, Marc Hanna and Brendan Breslin to give the Cards a 3-0 advantage.

In the 3rd, Hanna walked and Kalokitis reached on an infield single. Clary then made it on thanks to an Eagles error, but Chris McCloud grounded out, ending the threat.

Mary Washington got on the board for the first time in the 6th when Seth Jordan drove home Kevin Stein with a single, cutting CUA's lead to two.

The Cards came right back however, scoring once in the 7th to go back in front by three. Clary got things started with a two-out single, and McCloud followed with a single of his own.

Following a walk to pinch hitter Mike McFarland, Clary came across on a wild pitch, making it a 4-1 game.

Mowatt did the rest from there, holding the Eagles off the scoreboard for the final three frames.

Carroll earns the win in his season debut, while Eagles starter Ben Sisk took the loss after allowing one run on three hits in 5.1 innings.

Kalokitis led the Cardinals offensively with three hits, while Clary added two, as well as four putouts and three assists in the field.

CUA will now welcome Eastern to Talbot Field on Saturday afternoon for the Cardinals' 2013 home opener. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
