Ground Game Leads to First ODAC Win of 2013

WASHINGTON – With a 2013 team-high 326 yards rushed and a season-best 199 yards rushed by senior Michael Pitsenberger, the Cardinals defeated the Hornets of Shenandoah 37-7 for their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win of the season on Saturday.

CUA advances to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the ODAC, as SU drops to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Pitsenberger led the offense with three touchdowns, Peter Rosa added to the Cards' offense with a 24-yard field goal and Alex Evans scored two touchdowns both from TJ Tutone.

The Cardinal offense held the ball for 35:20 minutes of the contest, posting 519 yards on 87 plays, compared to the Hornets' 199 on 64 plays.  Tutone threw for two touchdowns and 123 yards in 10-13-0 passing.  Nick Cortese ran for 138 yards, and Alex Evans caught six passes for 86 yards and two TDs.

Catholic opened the game with Pitsenberger's 10-yard run touchdown.  SU tied the contest when Andrew Smith reached the end zone on a 14-yard run.  CUA stretched the lead to 14-7 when Pitsenberger closed out 10 plays over 40 yards with a 1-yard run.  Tutone found Evans wide open in the end zone from 3 yards out at the end of the second quarter.  On a 4th-and-5, Rosa completed the three-point conversion.  Tutone connected with Evans for the second time of the contest with a 16-yard catch.  Pitsenberger closed out the offensive effort with a 1-yard touchdown.

Catholic's defense limited the Shenandoah defense to eight first downs in the contest.  While SU's Justin Neff went 10-15-0, the quarterback was held to 48 yards and was taken down twice.  The Cards also forced two Honerts' fumbles.

Andrew Smith led the home offense with 70 yards rushed, as Brandon Adams caught five passes for 33 yards.

CUA returns to Cardinal Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 26 to host Emory & Henry at 1 p.m.
