Box Score TOWSON, Md. – No. 17 CUA had little trouble getting past
Goucher on Wednesday evening, as the Cardinals downed the Gophers
56-38. CUA held the Gophers to 14 first half points and 30.2
percent shooting for the game to earn its 17th win of the
season. The win is the 200th of CUA Head Coach Matt
Donohue's career, which also includes stops at Elmira College
and Bloomfield College.
CUA was led offensively by Jill Woerner with 19 points on 9 of 12
shooting, and Katarina Owunna with 10 points. Emily Grabiak
handed out four assists to give her 254 for her career, good for
sixth in school history.
Owunna was the team's leading rebounder with seven, and
Jenny McGann recorded three of the Cards' 12 steals.
Woerner's jumper 4:57 into the game put CUA in front 10-5,
and the senior added a layup a minute later to make it 12-5.
An 8-0 run by the Cards midway through the half extended their
lead to 20-7 with 7:03 on the clock, before Goucher scored four
straight to cut it to a nine-point game.
Owunna's jumper at the 3:58 mark put the Cardinals in front
24-11, but Goucher scored the final three points to cut it to a
10-point lead at the break.
Back-to-back baskets by the Gophers early in the second cut the
CUA lead to only six, but Woerner splashed a three down the other
end to make it a nine-point advantage.
Leading 31-21 with 16:35 remaining, CUA ripped off a 10-0 run to
double its lead to 20 with less than 13 minutes to play.
Following a Goucher basket, CUA answered with another big run,
this time scoring 13 straight as the lead reached 31 with 6:38 to
go.
That wound up being the Cardinals biggest lead of the evening, and
they cruised from there to earn conference win number-six.
CUA finished with a 45-33 advantage on the backboards, and the
Cardinals outscored the Gophers 20-12 in the paint.
Donohue now has 82 wins at CUA, the most in women's
basketball annals. He earned 71 wins at Elmira and 47 at
Bloomfield.
On Saturday, CUA heads to Kings Point, N.Y. to face Merchant
Marine Academy. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
