CUA tunes up for postseason with 18-5 win over Scranton

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cardinals closed their regular season out in dominant style on Saturday, downing Scranton 18-5.  CUA raced out to a 14-2 halftime lead and cruised from there to complete its fourth unbeaten regular season in the Landmark Conference in five years.  Senior Mallory Vogel found the back of the net six times to lead the Cards.

Vogel wasted little time in getting on the board, scoring her first goal 1:57 into the game, and adding her second 15 seconds later.

Scranton cut the Cardinals lead to one on Deanna Giorno's goal 6:45 into the opening half, but goals by Katie Miller and Mary Swarthout upped CUA's lead to 4-1.

Tori Neill added to the CUA lead with a score 13:40 into the half, and after Swarthout netted her second goal of the day, the Cardinals were in front by five.

Vogel then registered her third score of the half with 14:19 to play before intermission, and after Theresa Ciletti scored on a free position shot, the lead was up to seven and Scranton was forced to call a timeout.

The stoppage did little to slow CUA, with Swarthout and Ciletti scoring once each, and Vogel adding two more goals to make it 12-1 with four minutes to play before halftime.

Kaela Mahon scored Scranton's second goal of the half at the 27:20 mark, but Vogel and Swarthout closed things out with two more scores to send the Cardinals into halftime ahead by 12.

The scoring continued for CUA in the second when Mary Robinson scored on a free position shot 2:50 in to make it 15-2.

Emily Mulligan scored the Royals third goal of the afternoon off an assist from Jilliana DePaolera with 21:40 remaining, but Miller took a feed from Gretchen Wade and scored to make it 16-3 in favor of CUA.

Meghan O'Brien and Robinson closed out the scoring for CUA with goals in the final four minutes of action.

CUA finished with a commanding 33-13 advantage in shots and a 20-14 lead in ground balls.  The Cardinals also won 17 of the 25 draw controls and were 10 of 14 in clear attempts.

Ciletti led the Cardinals with five ground balls, while Swarthout and Kelly Neligan won five draw controls each.  Swarthout also caused three turnovers, while in goal, Tricia Pehnke got the start and stopped two shots, before giving way to Yasmeen Ajdari for the final 30 minutes, who sent back three shots.

CUA returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when the top-seeded Cardinals begin their quest for a fifth straight Landmark Conference championship.  CUA will host the fourth-seeded Scranton Royals in the Landmark Tournament semifinals at 4 p.m. inside Cardinal Stadium.
