Cardinals sprint past Rowan 18-7 for fourth straight win

Box Score

GLASSBORO, N.J. – CUA won its fourth straight game on Wednesday, with an impressive 18-7 victory over Rowan.  Katie Miller led the way for the Cardinals with six goals, while Theresa Ciletti added four scores to help CUA improve to 11-5 on the season.

Miller got CUA on the board with a goal only 2:19 into the game, and after she scored off a feed from Mary Swarthout four minutes later, the Cardinals were on top by two.

Becca Wood got Rowan on the board for the first time 7:34 into the opening half, but the Cardinals responded with four straight goals to take a commanding 6-1 lead with 16:15 left to play before halftime.

Swarthout scored twice during the 4-0 run, while Miller and Ciletti scored once.

Rowan's Michelle Lunbrano cut the Cardinals lead to four with a goal at the 15:34 mark, but Miller struck at the 15-minute mark to push the lead back to five.

Nicole Laitner then got into the act for CUA to make it 8-2, before Lunbrano scored her second goal of the evening to again make it a five-goal spread.

Back-to-back goals by Mallory Vogel and Mary Robinson in a span of 31 seconds gave the Cardinals a commanding 10-3 lead, but the Profs' received a goal from Vicky Sucharski in the final minute to make it 10-4 at halftime.

Goals by Lubrano and Wood in the first two minutes of the second half cut it to a 10-6 lead for CUA, but Ciletti answered with her second and third goals of the night to push the lead back to six with 22 minutes remaining.

The lead then grew to nine after goals by Lindsay Brophy, Ciletti and Vogel, and it hit double digits on Meghan Brady's goal with 13:42 left on the clock.

Later, Miller netted her fifth and sixth goals of the game in a span of less than two minutes, and that pushed the lead to 12 with less than ten minutes to play, which all but put the game out of reach.

CUA finished with a 32-23 advantage in shots and a 21-18 lead in ground balls.  The Cardinals also won 16 draw controls and were 12 of 17 on clear attempts.

Swarthout won six draw controls and caused two turnovers, while Tricia Pehnke played the first 54 minutes in goal, sent back seven shots and scooped up five ground balls, before giving way to Yasmeen Ajdari for the final six minutes.

CUA will close out its regular season on Saturday with a trip to Pennsylvania to face the Scranton Royals.  Start time is set for 12 p.m.  The Cardinals have already clinched the top seed in next week's Landmark Conference Tournament and will host Scranton on Wednesday, May 2 in the tournament semifinals.
