Cardinals open conference play with 19-10 win over Drew

Box Score

WASHINGTON – The No. 18 Cardinals opened their Landmark Conference schedule in style on Saturday, racing past Drew 19-10 inside Cardinal Stadium.  10 different CUA players scored and freshman Tricia Pehnke made eight saves in goal in her first career start.

CUA wasted little time in taking control of this one, scoring the first four goals in less than five minutes.  Mary Swarthout, Meghan Brady, Lindsay Brophy and Katie Miller each found the back of the net for an early 4-0 lead.

Drew's Yasmin Baldini got the Rangers on the board with a free position goal at the 20:51 mark, but Brady came right back with her second score to make it 5-1.

Nikki Kleiman made it 5-2 with a goal at the 13:38 mark, but Swarthout and Theresa Ciletti answered with back-to-back scores for the Cardinals to make it 7-2 with 11:59 to play before halftime.

The teams traded the next four goals, capped by Swarthout's score with 1:49 on the clock, and Miller and Brady added two more scores for CUA to give the Cards a commanding 11-4 lead at intermission.

Miller began the second half with two straight scores in the span of a minute, and after Caroline DiBartolomeo got into the act at the 27:12 mark, CUA was in front by ten, 14-4.

Lyndsay Rossi cut it to a nine-goal spread with a score at the 26:39 mark, but Gretchen Wade responded for CUA to make the score 15-5.

Following a Rangers score at the 21:07 mark, Wade and Meghan O'Brien teamed up for back-to-back Cardinal goals, to up the lead to 17-6 with 16:12 remaining.

Nicole Laitner and O'Brien added two more goals for CUA in the final 10 minutes to complete the scoring for the Cardinals.

CUA finished with a 42-25 advantage in shots and a 24-17 lead in ground balls.  The Cardinals dominated the draw controls, winning 24 of 31, and they were also 8 of 9 in clear attempts.

Swarthout finished with nine draw controls, six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers, while Mary Robinson won four draw controls. Pehnke stopped eight shots in 54 minutes of action, before giving way to Yasmeen Ajdari for the final six minutes, and she sent back two shots.

CUA will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when the Cardinals play host to Haverford inside Cardinal Stadium.  Start time is set for 4 p.m.
