GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Leading 10-9 with 16:13 remaining in
Tuesday's game No. 11 CUA appeared to be in solid shape, but
No. 6 Gettysburg unleashed a 7-0 run that spanned 5:24 and the
Bullets came away with a 16-11 win over the Cardinals. Katie
Buonpastore continued her strong play for CUA with three goals on
the day.
Mary Swarthout's goal with 16:13 to play put the Cardinals
on top 10-9, giving CUA only its second lead of the entire
game. Neither team scored for the next eight minutes until
Kelsey Markiewicz found the back of the net with 7:49 to play and
tied things up at ten. 20 seconds later Marnie Commins gave
the Bullets a one-goal lead.
From there Gettysburg scored five more times, capped off by
Commins goal with 2:25 on the clock to put the Bullets in front
16-10. Buonpastore added her fourth goal with 20 ticks to go,
but by that time it was too little, too late for CUA.
Gettysburg led 3-1 with nearly seven minutes gone in the early
going, with CUA's lone score coming from Kate Robinson.
With 20:52 to go in the opening half Swarthout pulled the Cardinals
within one score, but two straight goals by Hannah Church gave the
Bullets a 5-2 lead with 19:55 on the clock.
CUA stormed back with three unanswered goals, including one apiece
by Lindsay Davenport, Buonpastore and Robinson, and that knotted
the score at five with 3:40 left in the half.
Church had the final say of the opening 30 minutes though, finding
the back of the net with 2:44 on the clock to give the Bullets a
6-5 lead at intermission.
Exactly one minute into the second half Davenport tied things at
six with her 21st goal of the season, but Commins came back 43
seconds later and put Gettysburg back on top by one.
With 25:47 to play Buonpastore scored on a free position shot to
make it a 7-7 game, but again Commins had an answer, this one
coming with 24:18 to play.
Back-to-back goals by Robinson and Buonpastore then made it a 9-8
game in favor of the Cardinals with 20:20 on the clock, but Kelsey
Markiewicz scored off a feed from Commins with 19:37 remaining and
the teams were tied yet again, this time at nine.
Swarthout was then able to put CUA in front, but the Cardinals
were not able to hold on and suffered their first road loss of the
2011 season.
Gettysburg was credited with 31 shots in the game, while CUA
totaled 27. Swarthout picked up a team-high three ground
balls for the Cardinals and also led the team in draw controls with
four and caused turnovers with two. Gabby Sena stopped six
shots in goal.
Commins and Church wound up with five goals apiece for the Bullets
and Maddie Coleman sent back ten CUA shots in goal.
On Saturday, CUA opens up a four-game homestand when the Cardinals
play host to Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference contest.
Start time from inside Cardinal Stadium is slated for noon.
