WASHINGTON – CUA ran its win streak to four with a 62-37 victory over St. Mary's on Tuesday evening inside the DuFour Center.  The Cardinals jumped out to a 32-18 halftime lead and forced the Seahawks into a 27% shooting performance from the floor en route to the win.

CUA came out strong, racing out to a 17-2 lead in the first seven minutes of action.  A Kelli Josephsen jumper and Jenny McGann 3-pointer pushed the lead to 22-4 with 9:19 to play in the opening half, while Emily Grabiak's steal and layup made it a 25-7 game with 6:17 on the clock.

Later, six straight points by St. Mary's made it a 25-13 game, but Liz Briones answered with a 3-pointer down the other end to extend the Cardinals lead to 28-13.

A pair of Rachel Ferri free throws with 1:40 to go before halftime made the score 32-18 in favor of CUA, which is how it remained heading into intermission.

Shana Lewis scored the first two points of the second half for St. Mary's, but CUA responded with six straight to open up a 38-18 advantage.

Briones' free throw at the 14:27 mark again made it a 20-point affair, while Katarina Owunna's bucket three minutes later upped the lead to 21.

Three straight free throws by Owunna gave CUA its biggest lead of the evening up to that point, 51-27, with 8:42 to play.

With 2:32 to go Grabiak drained a shot from downtown to again put CUA in front by 24.

Cardinals Head Coach Matt Donohue was able to empty his bench in the final minutes, and Mary Hagaman and Patrice Ermillio both responded with baskets to push the CUA lead to 27, 62-35. 

Owunna finished with a game-high 16 points for CUA, and she also pulled down six rebounds and totaled four steals.  Grabiak netted 11 points, while Woerner added nine and McGann scored seven.

Woerner led the Cardinals with eight boards as CUA dominated the Seahawks on the glass, pulling down 51 caroms to only 30 by the visitors.  Holly Janicki dished out three assists, and CUA sank six 3-pointers as a team.

St. Mary's was led in scoring by Marche Pearson with 10 points, and she also pulled down nine boards.  The Seahawks turned the ball over 25 times, which CUA converted into 21 points.
 
CUA returns to action on Saturday evening when the Cardinals welcome Goucher town for the Landmark Conference opener.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. from inside the DuFour Center.
