Cardinals Repeat with 17-5 Victory
CUA takes the Moravian series 2-1
4/20/2008
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Catholic University baseball team defeated
the Moravian College Greyhounds (16-17, 8-7 Landmark) Sunday 17-5
to claim the three-game series 2-1. The score mirrored that
of yesterday's second game which CUA also won. The Cardinals
are now 18-13-1 overall and 7-6 in the Landmark Conference.
CUA went scoreless in the first inning and allowed Moravian
three runs but from that point on the offense shifted to the
Cards. The Cardinals held the Greyhounds in the second and
third while score one run in each inning. Bobby Picardo's
(Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Middletown South/Communications) single
up the right side brought in the first runner and a sac fly by Mike
Goodman (Brookville, Md./Sherwood) scored the second.
In the fourth inning, CUA added one more when Matthew Rosner
(Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) advanced to home on a throwing
error to tie it up. Unfortunately, Moravian regained the lead
with two runs to make the score 5-3. That small rally would
end the scoring for the Greyhounds but sparked the Cards with five
runs in the top of the fifth. Two came in after a homer by
Joe Maca (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Saint Dominic) and Kevin Sweeney's
(Bethesda/St. Anselm's Abbey School) sac fly added the third.
Hits from Rosner and Patrick Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton)
made it 8-5 in CUA's favor.
The offense continued to swing in the sixth adding four more
runs to the total. Sweeney brought in the first with his
second sac fly of the afternoon and Rosner hit a three-run homer
late in the inning to keep it going. An error allowed Tommy
Little (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) to cross the plate in the top of
the seventh and a two-run homer from Goodman built up the CUA
advantage. Finally in the eighth the Cardinals finished it up
on a Cory Hudson (Beltsville, Md./Gonzaga) triple to bring in the
first as he crossed on an error making the final 17-5.
Rosner led the Cardinals with a 3-4 performance, four runs
scored and as many RBI he was helped by Goodman's 2-2 day with
three runs and three RBI. The Cardinals had 14 hits and one
error while Moravian notched 10 hits but had seven errors for the
game. On the mound Drew Hoffmaster (Brookeville,
Md./Sherwood) took the win with six strikeouts.
The Cardinals will face Washington College on Tuesday at 3:30
p.m., at Talbot Field. The game will also be CUA's senior
day.
