Cardinals Hold on For 6-4 Win
CUA takes the Scranton series
2-1
4/13/2008
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University baseball team defeated the
University of Scranton Royals (16-8, 8-4 Landmark) 6-4 Sunday
afternoon at Talbot Field. The win gave CUA the 2-1 advantage
to close out the Landmark Conference series. With the win the
Cards improve to 15-12-1 overall and 6-6 in the Landmark
Conference.
A home run put Scranton on the board first but CUA quickly took
the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. With one
runner on, Joe Devine (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) doubled to knot
the score. Two batters later, Devine crossed the plate on a
Tommy Bowles (Davidsonville, Md./Mount Saint Joe) single.
Clinging to a one-run lead, the Cardinals added to it in the bottom
of the second after another Devine double to bring two players in
making it 3-1. Unfortunately, the three-run advantage was
short-lived as Scranton came with two of their own in the top of
the third.
Both teams quieted the bats for the next three innings with
neither squad able to score. In the top of the seventh,
Scranton tied it up once again after a big double. However,
the Cards responded with a run of their own thanks to a Sean Earley
(Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock Township) single and some crafty base
running by Matthew Rosner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill
West). CUA then added some breathing room in the bottom of
the eighth when Mike Goodman (Brookville, Md./Sherwood) scored
after a Royal error. The top of the ninth was tense but
despite a bases-loaded, one out situation closer Michael Bzozowski
(Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) managed to strikeout the final to
batters for the 6-4 victory.
Devine led the Cardinal offense going 2-4 with a pair of
doubles, two runs scored and three RBI for the game. The
Cards were out hit 10-9 but committed just one error to Scranton's
two. Billy Robbett (Springfield, Va./Bishop Iretan) was
awarded the win on the mound pitching one inning while Bzozowski
was credited with the save.
The Cardinals will face Randolph-Macon on Tuesday at Talbot
Field in a non-conference game.
