Quakers Roll Over Cardinals 41-18
CUA hosts final contest of 2006 next Saturday
11/4/2006
GREENSBORO, N.C. - CUA had a tough day all around against the
Guilford College Quakers (6-3, 3-2 ODAC) losing 41-18 and dropping
to 3-6, 1-4 ODAC for the season. Although quarterback Keith
Ricca (Poolesville, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) threw for 446
yards and three touchdowns, he also had five interceptions in the
loss. The incredibly physical game was close in the
opening quarter but a big second stanza put the Cards down by
21 and they couldn't make up the deficit.
The Quakers struck first when gun-slinging quarterback Josh
Vogelbach hit his receiver for a 47-yard pickup to set up the one
yard touchdown pass. The missed point after made the score
6-0. CUA quickly returned the favor when Ricca hit Andrew
Buis (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) with an 80-yard gain and the
touchdown. The Cards attempted an extra two but were stopped
with an interception in the end zone.
The second quarter was all Guilford as the Quakers went from a
6-6 tie to 27-6 at the break. An interception late in the
first quarter at their own 11 turned into a 10-play 89-yard drive
that resulted in seven more. Midway through the quarter GC
had another long drive that ended with Vogelbach hitting Kevin
Vaughn for a TD. With time winding down, Guilford got the ball
back. The Quakers took advantage as Vogelbach threw a 58-yard
pass for a touchdown.
CUA didn't give up any turnovers in second but was forced to
punt on every series resulting in the 21-point deficit.
Without that one quarter, it would have been a different game as
CUA played the Quakers evenly in the second half.
Early in the third quarter Guilford added another score with a
two-yard touchdown run by Micah Rushing. Instead of giving up
the Cards tightened up the defense allowing no more points in the
stanza and added a TD of their own. At 4:27 Ricca passed to
Ryan Bowman (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) 31-yards downfield to
give CUA six more.
The fourth quarter was much like the third as the Quakers scored
early off of a Vogelbach pass but CUA came back and made the Ricca
to Bowman connection one more time resulting in the 41-18 final.
Ricca had a tumultuous day throwing for 446 yards on 30
completions and three touchdowns but five interceptions as well as
some hard hits by the Quakers. Vogelbach had 397 yards with
five touchdowns and 27 completions. Buis led all receivers
with 186 yards and Bowman added 88. ODAC Player of the Week
Noah Rogers (Lorton, Va./Bishop O'Connell) had 46 yards on the
afternoon before going down with an injury in the second
half. On the ground CUA rushed for 21 yards while GC had
37. Bill Gross (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) continued
to lead the defense with 7.5 tackles and 1.5 sacks for the game.
The Cards will host Bridgewater in their season finale next
Saturday at home beginning at 1:00 p.m.
